How to Create a Retail Order
Ring up a sale in one of your Retail markets: pick the items, then choose the customer, or leave it as a walk-in sale.
Before you start
- You need a Retail market (see How to Create a Market). To pick products from a list, add them to the market first; you can also type in a custom item.
- You can start a new order from a market's Orders tab (New Order), from Carts & Drafts, or from a customer account's Orders tab, which fills in the customer for you.
Steps
- Click New Order.
- Market: if your organization has more than one Retail market, choose the one this sale belongs to. With one Retail market, the order goes there automatically.
- Customer: start typing a name, company or email and pick the customer. For a sale at the counter with no customer account, leave it empty; the order is saved as a Walk-In Sale.
- Order Number is optional. Leave it empty and the order gets the next number automatically (for example R-00042).
- Under Items, use Add a Product to search by name or SKU. Picking the same product again adds one more. Products that track stock show how many are in stock, and you are warned if there are not enough.
- Use Add a Custom Item for something that is not in your catalog: give it a name and a price.
- Change a line's Qty or Unit Price in the table, or remove it with the bin.
- Enter any Tax, and check the Currency (three letters, for example USD).
- Click Create Order. If you have not added any items, you are asked whether to create an empty order; choose Add Items First to go back.
What you'll see
The new order opens. It is a Draft until the customer pays: use Take Payment to record the payment at the till, or Authorize when payment comes later. While it is a draft, a product that tracks stock is held for it, so it cannot be sold twice. See How to Manage a Retail Order.
