What You Can Do in Docs
Docs is the nav bar tool labeled Docs (tooltip: "Documents") that opens whenever organization.isDocs is on and you have the View Documents right. It is a completely separate module from the Documents section under Settings — that Settings section defines doc types, folders, and stacking-order pipelines for an admin; Docs is where an everyday member actually stores, creates, and edits files. The platform's own internal description of this app is: "Personal document storage with Collabora editing, classification, and cloud sync."
Two things live under one button
Clicking Docs in the top nav opens a small menu with two sections:
- Manage My Docs — takes you to the Document Manager page (
/doc/manager), a file browser for everything you own, everything shared with you, and (if you have access) the org-wide document library. - Create New — only shown if your organization has the Docs Editor feature enabled and you're a real member — lets you spin up a brand-new Document, Spreadsheet, Presentation, or Drawing. Each opens in a new browser tab as a live, real-time collaborative editor (Collabora-based) — this is the actual "Word/Sheets/Slides" experience.
You can also open any compatible existing file (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, .doc, .xls, .ppt, .odg) from the Document Manager straight into that same real-time editor — see How to Edit a Document with Your Team
The Document Manager's tabs
The Document Manager organizes your files into tabs, each backed by a real API call (not a placeholder):
Tab | What it shows |
|---|---|
Original Docs | Files you've uploaded or created, as originally saved. |
Edited Docs | The subset of your files that have a design/e-signature version attached. |
System Docs | Org-wide documents visible to you, separate from your personal files. |
Prepare Selected | An ephemeral workspace for merging a multi-document selection into one download — see How to Download Multiple Documents as One File |
Binders | Persistent, named collections you build yourself from multiple documents, optionally with cover pages, a table of contents, and separators — see How to Add a Document to a Binder |
Uploads | Where you drag and drop new files in. |
History | A per-document activity log (changes and downloads), not a content version history. |
Hidden Docs / Trash | Documents you've hidden, or deleted. |
Shared With Me | Files other members or teams have shared with you. |
One thing that isn't the real-time editor
Each document row also has a separate pencil-style "Edit" icon that, for converted files, opens a document design workspace with e-signature settings (Send for Signature, signer setup). That's part of the e-signature/legal document feature, not the Docs real-time co-editing flow described in this folder — don't confuse the two icons in the Actions column.
